Volkswagen originally used two lock nuts with a locking plate between them to secure the front drums to the spindle on their 1954 to 1965 Beetle and 1956 to 1965 Karmann Ghia models. This lock nut is right hand threaded, so the clockwise rotation of the right wheel when the vehicle is moving does not loosen the nut
